You might recognise this:
-
You replay incidents when it’s quiet.
-
You feel on edge at home.
-
You avoid certain reminders.
-
You’re tired of white-knuckling through it.
-
EMDR helps your nervous system process what it never had time to process.
What is EMDR Therapy?
When trauma is unresolved, the nervous system can remain on high alert. The amygdala continues to signal danger even when the event has passed, while the prefrontal cortex struggles to regulate the response. EMDR supports the brain’s natural processing system so the memory becomes integrated rather than re-triggering.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological therapy used worldwide for PTSD and trauma-related distress.
Rather than relying on talking through events in detail, EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional intensity and stop intruding into the present.
From a neuroscience perspective:
-
Trauma memories can become “stuck” in the brain’s threat system
-
EMDR supports adaptive memory processing
-
The memory remains — but the nervous system no longer reacts as if the danger is happening now
EMDR is particularly effective for:
-
Work-related trauma
-
Critical incidents
-
Cumulative exposure common in emergency services
-
PTSD and trauma-related symptoms
